The Oxymoron of “Personhood” Legislation

I am one mad mama right now!  Watch out! The ongoing list of atrocities to woman-kind that is the “personhood” movement is astounding.  Personhood is the name given by its proponents to legislation intending to circumnavigate the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision by granting full rights to a two-cell, microscopic zygote only moments after sperm penetrates egg. North Dakota, Mississippi, and Oklahoma currently have personhood legislation in the pipeline. These thinly-veiled attempts to curb the legal right to abortion have bled over into a litany of other anti-woman...

The Presidential Election and Infertility Law

I think I deserve a pat on the back for not calling this post “Newt is an Ass”.  Newt Gingrich, the disgraced former speaker of the House that was pushed out in a ground–breaking censure by his own colleagues for ethics violations, is somehow inexplicably an actual contender for President of the United States of America.  Yes, in America we (at least some of us) love mediocrity – we love presidents that drop out of college and can’t even fulfill their obligations to their constituents.  I literally think I’m getting a repeated use injury from...

A Beautiful Work of A.R.T.: Books for Children about Alternative Conception

It is so important that we celebrate the wonderful way that ART (Artificial Reproductive Technology) babies were brought in to the world.  Studies have shown that making it a normal part of the “how you were born” story and not saving it like a secret for when they’re older is the healthiest approach. Here is a collection of books that tell the story of conception the not-so-old-fashioned way. Hope Will Have a Baby: The Gift of Egg Donation Also available in The Gift of Embryo Donation, The Gift of Sperm Donation, and The Gift of Surrogacy.  by Irene Celcer A Part...

Bust An Infertility Myth: Infertility Is A Private Affair

I went to get a massage the other day.  I was looking forward to relaxing and easing some of the strain of carrying around two newborns that had settled in my shoulders.  I explained to the therapist that I had been on extended bedrest, then birthed twins, then went through a NICU journey.  I told her this to explain some of the reasons I had tension in specific areas and, I’ll admit it, I’m so happy about my twin blessings that I like to tell people.  As she began to work the knots out of my neck the following exchange took place, Therapist: “Twins run in your...

Promoting Animal Rights On the Backs of the Infertile – Shame On PETA!

Posted by on Apr 6, 2011 in Infertility, Soapbox | 5 comments

Shame on you PETA.  I have been a long time believer in your cause and think your ads with celebrities going naked instead of wearing fur is wonderful but this latest contest is tasteless, hateful, and illogical and undermines your cause by belittling another worthy cause. Ok, fuck it.  I’m not going to be diplomatic here – this really pisses me off.  PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, launched a contest to win a vasectomy for National Infertility Awareness Week.  Yeah, for NIAW. In honor of National Infertility Awareness Week (April 24 to 30), PETA will...
