Scouting Values: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Gender-Diverse Parenting

Have you hear the hulabaloo about the Colorado Girl Scout Troop that admitted a transgendered girl? How about the other Girl Scout troops that have protested by disbanding or posting hateful videos on YouTube? It all really makes me sick to my stomach.  I was a Girl Scout, my mom was a Girl Scout leader.  My sister was one of those hardcore primitive camping type Girl Scout.  While I was a more sewing and cooking kinda Girl Scout. That was one of the things that was wonderful about it – it allowed for a very diverse definition of what it meant to be a girl.  There were no limits...

Herman Cain’s Parenting Plan

Attention Children:  Effective immediately, in order to ensure a fair distribution of both responsibility and rewards, we will be implementing a 9-9-9 parenting plan.  Children can now expect: 9 minutes of breastfeeding at each breastfeeding session.  If you are still hungry you will not receive more nursing time.  If you are full at 8 minutes you will be required to continue suckling until you reach 9 minutes. 9 minutes of comfort per day.  Please plan your crying and other needs accordingly because there will not be a plan for extended comfort minutes. 9 diaper changes per day.  Do...

My Creative Outlet

I’ve written before about my surprise in finding I enjoy crafty things like sewing and scrapbooking.  I had kind of pigeon-holed myself into the scientific/analytic role and somehow convinced myself that precluded creativity.  How wrong I was!  Everyone needs a creative outlet. So, I’ve fallen deeply in love with Etsy and all things crafty.  I was wishing and wishing that I could get good enough to actually sell my wares.  I think I’m a way off with my knitting and sewing but I recently found a wonderful creative outlet in a place I had never imagined: T-shirts. Several...

“I Don’t Think of You As Fat!” Raising Size-Accepting Children

Posted by on May 13, 2011 in Feminism, Health | 8 comments

People get very uncomfortable when I refer to myself as “fat.”  I’ve been doing this for years.  I was much thinner when I started and I said it in a way of dissing myself before someone else could.  It wasn’t a very healthy thing.  Now that I’m older, I say it for a much bigger reason which is what I want to address here. Whenever I describe myself as fat my friends will normally say “I don’t think of you as fat.”  I used to feel pleased when they said this (and I was probably fishing for just that) but now I’m just confused.  I...
