I’ve had much success washing my face with oil as well as making my own laundry detergent, deodorant, and shampoo (tutorials coming soon).  The best has been making my own toothpaste.  You know how I feel about fluoride.  Even as a topical application (which is the only application that *may* help teeth NOT ingestion through water) I don’t think it is neccessary.  However, mainstream toothpastes are filled with other bad ingredients.

ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: SODIUM MONOFLUOROPHOSPHATE (0.15% W/V FLUORIDE ION) INACTIVE INGREDIENTS: DICALCIUM PHOSPHATE DIHYDRATE, WATER, GLYCERIN, SORBITOL, SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE, CELLULOSE GUM, FLAVOR, TETRASODIUM PYROPHOSPHATE, SODIUM SACCHARIN

Sodium Lauryl sulfate is a known carcinogen and is used in tons of beauty products as a foaming agent.  Meaning it doesn’t actually benefit your teeth at all – it just makes for a “luxurious” “product feel”.

Sodium saccharin is an artificial flavorant and is also a carcinogen.

Keeping your teeth and gums clean and your breath fresh is easy with ingredients in your pantry!  Here’s how

You will need:

  • fine salt (optional, used for abrasion)
  • baking soada
  • peppermint essential oil

First mix 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1 TBLS water.  Add more water until you reach a thick paste.  If you make it too runny or too dry you can add more baking soda or water, respectively until you get it right.  Add 5 drops of peppermint essential oil.  You can add more until you reach the desired potency of mintiness.  That’s it.

Now this toothpaste will not taste sweet.  It will be salty.  But it isn’t “gross” and although you could add a sweetener (stevia, for example) it would not benefit your teeth.  I really don’t mind the salty – you aren’t going to swallow it anyways and your breath will smell minty from the peppermint not salty.

Peppermint essential oil is an antiseptic and anti-inflamatory.  It is also useful in reducing nausea so I’m wondering how this would work for women for whom tooth brushing is a nightmare during pregnancy.  I wish I could have tried it!  If you do while pregnant please let me know!

Baking soda absorbs odors, whitens, and has abrasion to clean your teeth.

I keep mine in a small BPA-free container and just scoop my toothbrush in it.  You could have one for each family member although I don’t mind using the same for everyone (I <3 germs).  I have not had Aellyn try this yet.  Not sure how much she’ll like the taste but I’m going to start mixing hers with this and hopefully transition slowly.  The boys will never know any different!

Most important my teeth and gums feel great and my breath is wonderful!
